Is there really a need for anti-racist of training?

Well, I still hear people say that there is no racism here, that ‘they’ are just being oversensitive and that Black people are getting unfair advantages.

But is there really no racism? Take a look at the video ‘Racism it’s still happening’.

In it, real people share their experiences of what it is like now and their thoughts on what they would like to see happen that would lead to an anti-racist environment where everyone can thrive.

My courses encourage people to think beyond stereotypes and accept the reality that there are as many differences in any one group as in any other group (even their own group, however they choose to define their group).

In a challenging but non-threatening way, participants explore the systematic nature of racism in society (and draw parallels with other ‘isms’) and the impact on their relationships with others and with themselves. They then explore practical ways to

challenge discrimination
develop their personal power and effectiveness and
create and maintain inclusive environments in which everyone can thrive.

Courses can:

be delivered in-house
be customised to suit participants’ specific needs
include the ‘brown eyes, blue eyes’ exercise in discrimination, providing an experiential opportunity for participants to understand the impact of power inequities.

About ‘Race’ and Equity training

In any organisation, the greatest asset is its people. People work better together when everybody feels included. And yet, because of power inequities in society, not everyone does.

So how do you create and maintain an inclusive culture? It can sometimes be easier to have inclusion policies than to implement them.

These courses explore why that is.

Focusing on challenging racism (and drawing parallels with other ‘isms’ as well as the added complexities of intersectionality), they then give practical strategies for creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

About Black People and (Ethnic Minority) training

Some of Gillian’s courses are specifically for people from black communities because, as a black woman herself, Gillian fully understands that whilst it is often assumed that every black person automatically understands all about racism and knows how to eliminate it simply because they are black, in reality, that is not the case.

For example, Gillian designed and delivered the ‘Developing Management and Leadership Skills for Employment and Public Life’ course for PATH (Scotland) and developed the ‘race’ equality training input to NHS Lothian’s ‘Leading Better Care, Leading Across Difference’ course.
